First Solo overnight hike suggestion

Post by rob_v »

Hello all,
Still kind of new to camping. Have been on several camping trips w/ the fam at a camp ground. I'm new to AZ and am looking at doing some solo overnight, or 2 night hikes. Found this site, and they are a ton of places it seems.

This would be my first solo overnight hike. I really just want to just get out and go, but don't want to be stupid about it. I have the basics already, (tent, bag, backpack, water purifier, pockrocket stove).
Looking for some suggestions on a good starting point.
I have downloaded the app, and trying to import one of the hikes (Horton Super Loop - 1854) but its just spinning on the loading screen.

Ideally would like to hike out, camp overnight then hike back. So like I said, open for suggestions.
Thanks for any help you can give this newbie :)

welcome to haz rob!

working on that import issue right now, I'll report back when I know more

Perhaps a tad aggressive but that's a great loop depending on the forecast.

Found and fixed a load balancing issue on Route Cloud
RS import ID 1854 should load in just under a minute now

An easier option with more water sources in that vicinity is
[ Cabin Loop - Mogollon Rim ]
RS import ID 797

Thanks so much for the primer link, checking it out now. I also was able to get 1857 imported and the Cabin Loop and will be checking them out for sure.

My recommendation is Houston Brothers to Aspen Spring, although it is getting towards the end of the season for that camping option. The good news is that if you can sleep, you can backpack. For your first trip I'd recommend keeping it to half your maximum dayhike distance or less. You will find muscles you never knew you had. You can get ambitious on distance on your 2nd trip :)

A good choice [ Houston Brothers Trail - Aspen Spring Access ] between now to end of Sept into early Oct should be good to go with cooler days & definitely cooler nights. TH Park/Start at FR95/FR139A Park Location.

Not sure if and when you may plan this recommended overnight backpack to the Aspen Spring, but if you do here is a recent trip through this area with a good pic example of what might be your camping area--> [ photo ] (you can also camp further back in the pines with more day shade, off pic left).
