2022 Fire Season

Post by azbackpackr »

Well, here we go...

A fire out past Doney Park, northeast of Flagstaff, is fairly close to where I spend my summers. I was going to move my car there tomorrow. But I guess I won't be moving it there just yet. I'll park it somewhere else.

And... a friend and I were going to start a little bicycle tour over by Prescott, on Thursday. But part of our route is under a closure, due to the Crooks fire.

From the Crooks Fire in the Bradshaws, here's a time lapse video from Spruce Mtn looking south to Mt Davis (left) and Mt Union (right, with fire tower and antenna farm). Both appear to have active fire burning through the understory.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, May 5, Coconino, Prescott and Tonto national forests as well as the Williams and Tusayan districts of Kaibab National Forest will be under Stage 1 fire and smoking restrictions. Flagstaff will also adopt Stage 1 restrictions that day.

As always Coronado is late to the party. Chumley isn't the only one that wonders about CNF Management.

It's not clear to me where the fire is burning. The top of Josephine Canyon is at Josephine Saddle with the canyon running generally south and southwest from there. The "crosshairs" on the map that CNF posted is in an unnamed drainage east of Josephine Peak, which is not Josephine Canyon.

Hasn't that area burned before, maybe 10-15 years ago?

Thanks, longer than I thought. According to my old triplogs, I hiked there in May 2012, which is a while ago now.

It's not on InciWeb yet. Sort of looks like one canyon over from Josephine Canyon in the Temporal Gulch and Gardner Canyon area. That area is pretty thick with fuel from what I remember last year being in the area. Let's hope we don't have another windy day down here.

Not showing up on MODIS or VIIRS. They must have gotten it extinguished? Nothing active showing for the San Rafael fire either.

Per Incident commander Chad Rice, forest road 799 and the AZT is closed from Parker Lake to Harshaw road. They mis typed Patagonia Lake in the report.:-/

Tunnel Fire closure area reduced
CocoTheBadassNino wrote:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., May 16, 2022 – The Coconino National Forest has reduced the size of the closure area for the Tunnel Fire to allow for increased access and recreation in areas that access Lockett Meadow and the inner basin via Forest Road 552.

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has completed its assessment of the Tunnel Fire areas, and the Flagstaff Ranger District has determined it is safe to reduce the size of the closure in that area. Information about the BAER results can be found on the Tunnel Fire BAER Inciweb page, including the Soil Burn Severity Map.

At this time, the closure is set to remain in effect until June 20. However, the closure area may be reduced again in the future or may be completely rescinded before that date if conditions allow.

CocoTheBadassNino wrote:SEDONA, Ariz., May 16, 2022 – Resources are responding to a 1/10-acre fire, deemed the Wilson Fire, located 2.5 miles north of downtown Sedona (34°55'42.0"N 111°45'54.0"W) in the Wilson Tank area.

Air attack has arrived and an engine is on the way. A helicopter has been ordered as well.

The fire is minimally creeping and smoldering on a flat mesa in the Brins Fire (2006) burn scar. There is a low spread potential due to light southwest winds.

Smoke will be visible from the Sedona, Oak Creek, and Munds Park areas. There are no closures at this time.

The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. Monday by an aircraft flying overhead. Its cause is under investigation.

What is air attack if not a helicopter? And how is it attacking? Also, it's gonna be a long rough drive for that engine that's on the way.

IDK, perhaps an Airplane... slurry bomber(BOOM)
cowboylifestylenetwork wrote:Many fires burn in remote areas, and using slurry bombers first can slow a fire's spread until ground crews can reach the area.
