SR87 - aka Beeline Hwy

Post by chumley »

The engineering cluster :pk: that is the entire Slate Creek area is once again going under the ADOT knife.

The Beeline will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction until fall so that crews can once again attempt to prevent the whole area from sliding down the hill.

So, be prepared for slow traffic in the general Sunflower / Mt. Ord / Slate Creek area (about 20 miles south of Payson).

@hikeaz with total a length of ~272 miles, anybody who reads this notice might appreciate knowing which section of State Route 87 this affects.
(for those who don't want to look it up ... MP 201-204, which is in the vicinity of Bush Hwy to Four Peaks Road)

@hikeaz Good grief that's insanely terrible of me. I apologize for my reply and the tone it took. My bad.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has a resource for the public which can help. E-Maps - https://azdeq.gov/emaps
From that landing page, pick one of the maps that has very few items on it - I choose "Non-attainment Areas". Click "View Map".
When you arrive at the map, click the "Layer List" icon in the upper right corner, and scroll through the list, and deselect the non-attainment areas, so they don't clutter the map.
Then scroll to the bottom. Near the bottom (7th from the bottom?), click "Mile Posts", and green dots will show up on all state highways and interstates.
Zoom in on the road in question (SR 87?), and see the mile posts you're interested in.
NB! - County roads aren't included - most notably Lake Mary Road from Flagstaff down to its junction with SR87 near Clint's Well. It belongs to Coconino County, so there are no mile posts listed. Grrr!
I use this resource A LOT when I'm making directions for myself to get to sections of the Arizona Trail.
Enjoy!

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for southbound State Route 87 to be narrowed to one lane approximately 40 miles south of Payson and 6 miles south of Sunflower (near milepost 212), today, Monday, July 3, while crews are performing emergency pavement repairs due to vehicle fire damage. A temporary patch is needed to reopen the lane later Monday. When this temporary patch is in place, both lanes of SR 87 will have a reduced speed limit through the area until permanent repairs are made later this week.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for lane restrictions and delays on State Route 87 north of Sunflower from Wednesday, Oct. 25, to Tuesday, November 21,, 2023.

Drivers should allow extra travel time while the following daytime restrictions are in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and, if needed, 6 a.m. to noon on Fridays:

SR 87 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between mileposts 224 - 231. The lane closures will alternate between the north- and southbound lanes. Expect delays entering and exiting from Mount Ord trailheads. A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place, but larger loads can be accommodated with 12 hours notice. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 MPH in the work zone.

Thanks for this advisory. I was planning to revisit Half Moon trail from Rye in early November. I might need to "re-calculate."

(Maybe I'll climb it from Barnhardt again.)

I just returned from the Rye area, south to Phx on the Beeline. No restrictions southbound from Rye south. I saw about one or two miles of one lane on the northbound side (for repaving) starting a bit south of Sunflower. Since there was little traffic on the Beeline, I didn't see any delays from the restriction.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for intermittent closures on north- and southbound State Route 87 between Lindsay and Stapley drives over the weekends of May 3-6, 10-13 and 17-20 for a Western Area Power Administration project. These intermittent closures may occur during the following times:
9 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Saturdays
12 p.m. Saturdays to 12 p.m. Sundays
8 p.m. Sundays to 5 a.m. Mondays

NOTE: Law enforcement will be on site to direct traffic between closure periods lasting up to 15 minutes.

Northbound SR 87 closures set between Bush Highway, SR 188 (Sept. 29-Oct. 2)

Post by hiking_arizona »

Due to the slide just south of FR27/Mt Ord Trailhead....

A stretch of northbound State Route 87 between the Phoenix and Payson areas will be closed or narrowed from Sunday night, Sept. 29, to Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, while crews remove boulders and debris from a rockslide that occurred next to the highway earlier this year.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has scheduled northbound SR 87 closures from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights between Bush Highway and SR 188 (mileposts 199-236). Restrictions are scheduled to end by 8 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 2).

While the northbound closures are in place, drivers in the Phoenix area can consider detouring on eastbound US 60 to Globe and using westbound SR 188. Northbound I-17 to eastbound SR 260 (Camp Verde area) is another alternate route.

At times when northbound SR 87 is not closed, the highway will be narrowed to one lane near the work zone north of Sunflower. Southbound SR 87 also will be narrowed to one lane at times in the work area. Drivers should be prepared to slow down, merge safely and watch for workers and equipment along SR 87.

SR 87 is now open with no restrictions or closures. Lane closures for cleanup work in the area of milepost 228 are expected within daylight hours during the week of October 7th.
