Looking for Water Source info

Post by captainricco »

Hi All,
I am here from Reddit, and this site was recommended for updated info on water sources in the Superstition Wilderness. I’m having a heck of a time trying to navigate the site, so please let me know if there is an easier way to access the info I’m looking for, which is:
I’m putting together a loop to backpack in the area for the next few weeks and am wondering if the following springs on my Gaia app are flowing? It sounds like Charleboi and Le Barge are reliable?
And what about Horse Camp, Indian, white rock, crystal, and second water springs?
Thanks for any info!

@captainricco

Find by map
From the top of this page... how to find Charliebois Spring
Plan > Map
Zoom into the Charliebois Spring area and you will see a water droplet icon
Tap the water drop and it currently shows 79 water reports

If you are not sure of the exact location...
Zoom to the general vicinity and type Charliebois Spring in the search at the top of the map
Results are based on distance to center of map
Search is based on a few letters from each word of the name
In this case
char spr will get results

Find by Guide description page
If you have a clue about a trail that goes by the water source, type the trail name in search at the top of this page
Charlebois is an easy example because it has several guide pages. Charlebois nets three results, all will have Charliebois spring listed
  • Mobile devices
    Location tab > Water tab
  • Laptop/desktop
Far right column , midway down the page below the mini map
Find by Deep Search
Home > Deep Search > type term > tap Labels tab

Wow, right in front of me the whole time! Thank you.
I see some of the springs I mentioned don’t have any activity for the past several years. Any way to get more info on them?

Horse Camp for example: trends to be minimal, so you need to assess the current situation

The entire area got an inch or more of rain around Christmas but it was so dry that it was gone quick. We are currently in mini waves of moisture but nothing substantial.

I wouldn't rely on the iffy ones currently

Horse Camp is along [ Hoolie Bacon Trail #111 ]
So the next place I would look would be triplogs posted to that trail/page
However, they are all over a month old and possibly not interested in that spring

Generally agree with Joe; if there haven't been updates in a while, don't count on it. Although right now you'll probably find plenty of pools.
Charleboi/La Barge/Second water/bluff spring (near crystal) are reliable. I assume you linked to gaia which I think is banned from linking on here so it doesn't show. If you describe your route/dm me I can give you more beta

I'm an extremely nice guy and lightened up on linking over a year ago... Lol

Linking for a question is fine.

The entirety of the Superstition Wilderness netted 1.5"-2.0" of rain overnight and streams and washes are flowing to the point of being difficult to cross this morning. If the forecast for the next week or two holds, I would expect to find reliable water in any drainage through early March at a minimum.

Perhaps a dumb question, but are there any flow meters out there I haven't heard of? Or are you just making an educated guess (which is the same guess I would make right now)/have talked to someone who went out today? Thinking about heading out this afternoon so would be nice to know what to expect.

It loops by default, I tapped 24 to stop the looping

Gauges are few and far between and none are in the wilderness. I know of no secret ones. The best sources are other hikers who have been out there, or a couple of our resident HAZ retirees who enjoy trips to the trailheads for drive-by photographs.

While there are none in the Wilderness, the Whitlow gauge is probably the best in the concept of giving someone a general impression of rain event's impact on the creekbeds throughout the wilderness.

For example, the rain Chums describes can be seen in the spike yesterday.

But I also agree that getting first hand water reports from boots on the ground is best.
