Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
I'm thinking about taking a Friday off in October or November when the temps are nice and doing a 3 day, 2 night loop involving Rough Canyon, Paradise Canyon, and Reavis 109 N in the Supes. Hopefully Cimeron Mountain has some secrets to reveal. The off-trail terrain looks, well, rough, but the topo and satellite flyover views make it look doable. If anyone is interested, I'll listen to your input on the weekend, otherwise in a week or so I'll just pick a date and anyone who wants to join is welcome.
Keep in mind that a portion of this will be off-trail and it is likely at least some bushwhacking will be required, no whining about it since you are forewarned!

Think knee cap. Same thing effectively if your backpacking in Rough Canyon. Your not going to far either way.....big_load wrote:Rough Canyon is where that guy broke his leg a couple years back, isn't it?

I'll wait and see the dates you choose. I've already scheduled a lot of stuff Oct/Nov but there's always a chance something will fall through.

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
I am going to propose Nov 21-23rd and see what feedback I get over the next few days.
An extremely detailed exam of the route has revealed that there is one crux point for the whole trip of some concern at: 33.4774N 111.1949W.
It will be interesting how gnarly this spot turns out to be.

Oh No! Not off-trail..... I HATE off-trail hikes... NOT!
I'm in if the trip falls on a W/E that I'm not o/w committed.

oh boy, the Supes Wrecking Crew is being assembled... Steve the bushwhacker, Canyoneering Kurt, Wally the Speed Demon, Steve the Lawyer (just in case), and a Flying Squirrel.
man, it just cant get any better than this. Steve, I punched up those coordinates you provided and I dont see anything of interest (on USGS map). What exactly are we concerned about? A waterfall or somethin'?

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
A sharp rise of 60-80 feet. Beta I got from another source says it's not of concern. Just think to yourself that it can't be as bad as the waterfall in Deer Creek

Not that it's about ME or anything, but the W/Ends that I can make it are 11/1 & 11/22.
(PS - I just finished sharpening my pruners for the brush, but maybe I'll need something a bit more powerful...)

"There has been another update as of 2007 on Big Foot in the Superstition Wilderness Area. It was recently reported that a large upright animal spooked a rider and pack horse near the head waters of Rough Canyon along the northern edge of White Mountain. This story surfaced about five years ago. Rough Canyon is almost impossible to hike through. The area is extremely remote and ignored by many. The rider who reported the large upright animal was trying to get to the head of Rough Canyon to set up a camp and explore the area for archaeological sites. He claimed he was studying the pattern of inhabited areas north of White Mountain and south of Reavis Mountain."
Lon McAdam says that it took him 7 hours to hike 2 miles up Rough Canyon from Frog/Rogers.

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
Yes it is rough, like you can't ride a horse through it. But nonot, te-wa and wally will breeze right through it!
As for Joe B., he could walk right through it without even scratching his umbrella!
Don't believe all you read and as for Big Foot, I spent a night in the Canyon and heard nothing but an Owl.
So be wise like the old owl and put your concerns aside and enjoy the Sups for what they are.

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
2.5 miles, 1500 feet elevation to the top, I would think that we could beat 7 hours, no disrespect to Lon. (unless he was talking about starting from Rogers Canyon TH or something.)
Another 2.5 miles back to the trail via an easier route. 5 off trail miles, that should be doable in a day I would think. I was sitting here thinking we'd have some extra time.
I'll bring my bigfoot hunting rifle
No offense, but I don't trust a trip report that talks about bigfoot habitation with the trail description
On our last trip I took a gander at Rough. It looks big, rocky, but not completely vegetation choked in the streambed.
Edit: The last bit near the top does look vegetation choked, I'm bringing hiking poles to beat the catclaw back.

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
There are some old reports of sasquatches around Gowan Camp in the Mazatzals. If I go perhaps I could bring my late grandfather's Springfield 1903 with the flash suppressor? Actually, scratch that because I'm not humping that thing up this "trail." Not a light rifle.

Re: Rough Canyon Loop w/ Reavis 109 North
Anyone who knows me knows that the last thing that would keep me from an adventure is a brush-choked canyon or a big-foot..... I was merely adding a few perceived hurdles to keep out the riff-raff.

You're new to AZ, just letting you know this isn't so much a beginner trip. You may want to do something to prepare for it before november, like hiking Peter's Trail or wrestling a porcupine

Let me know what it'll be like and I'll prepare. I hiked the trail at lost dutchman state park up to the very top and down in 4 hours.
I'd love to do Peter's Trail... Anyone plan on hiking it soon?
