GPS Route Downloading - Formats
I have tried to download the Abineau/BearJaw route map.
None of the formats look to be compatible with my TOPO!, version 2.5.3. You list an MWP format for that tool, but the tool doesn't provide any way to utilize it, that I can find. It allows imports from a GPS unit, from a text file or from a clipboard.
What am I missing?

Under => Navigation => FAQ = > TOPO! Help
importing http://hikearizona.com/docs/topo-import.txt
However it's for the 4.2.3 version, I don't have an older version to write instructions. Google "gpsbabel" and you can download a tool to convert files

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
Thanks for the info.
When I tried to directly import the mysterious mwp file, I was able to do so after re-arranging a few of the columns.
Boy, there were a bunch of waypoints. I ended up drawing my own route over them, erasing them and then having TOPO create a new route. It made a lot more sense than following the original one.
But...I needed the original one to plot the route on the map.

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
I uploaded the routes from this site to the Garmin 400t using Sendmap20, but I can't figure out how to download from the GPS unit to my PC. Grrrr....

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
I have the same problem with my TOPO imports. It won't import a "route" just the waypoints which make up the route. Drawing a new route over all those waypoints is much cleaner.smivic wrote:Thanks for the info.

Edit: just noticed the OP was really long ago. Tried to delete, but Joe had replied already ...

Garmin Oregon & Colorado Directions
This is specifically for a Garmin Oregon 400t, however it will likely work on all Colorado & Oregon units. Perhaps others too.
No programs needed, just save directly to the unit. Think of it as a hard drive.
1)When you plug it in... a file browser of the unit pops up to a folder called "Garmin". This isn't it look to the left and select "Garmin Oregon". Then you should see "Garmin" & "Wherigo"
or perhaps...
You may get a popup dialog in Vista. Deny to scan the device. Then you get a list of choices. Select the yellow folder "Open folder to view files". Then you should see "Garmin" & "Wherigo"
2) Click and open the "Garmin" folder, then click and open the "GPX" folder.
Here is where you save GPX files from HAZ and can also upload to HAZ.
HAZ to GPS Unit
1) Save file in the GPX folder (at this point it's live in the unit, continue for other options)
2) Navigate to "Track Manger"
3) Select Track, then you can "View Map", "Set Color" etc.
GPS Unit to HAZ
1) When you start your hike navigate to "Setup", select "Reset", reset trip data & clear current track
2) Hike
3) When you finish or between hikes navigate to "Track Manager", select "Current Track" then "Save Track", then back to step #1 and reset
4) Plug unit in to USB, on the HAZ GPS Upload page click "Browse" then navigate to the GPX folder, select file and upload

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
Lately Joe tried to change the names of tracks to match the name they were posted under. Unfortunately Garmin software bombs on some names that have special characters in them, &, :, etc.

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
Big_Load, the GPS unit is my mom's, and neither of us could find a the MapSource CD. Unfortunately she threw away the box, and I suspect that the MapSource CD was one of those mini-CDs, and she missed it.....
I'm going to muck around with it on Thursday.

You don't need it.

James, I think you can download mapsource from Garmin's site if you want it (I don't use it much though)

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
Just uploaded my first route (Groom Creek). I merged 2 different tracks (don't ask) using EasyGPS, and the combined route looks good in EasyGPS. However, when I upload the route to this site it adds another "leg" onto the trip which is a straight line between each end of the trip.

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
The GPS route that I was referring to with the superfluous "leg" is actually from the Pinals. I was technically on the Groom Creek Loop for about 3 miles, and I decided to file the hike under that one because that's the trailhead I parked at.

Re: GPS Route Downloading - Formats
Will do. Thanks Joe! I think I've figured out enough to be dangerous.
I think I've figured out something, however. The upper leg of the superfluous leg on my gps route ends right about where I had to change the batteries at lunch. Don't know if that helps.
