Re: Eagle Rock fire (NE Side of Sitgreave Mt)
Hiking down Humphreys today we saw it from a tiny plume to a huge plume nearly swallowing Kendrick. Hopefully the fire doesn't spread to the south side of Kendrick but it doesn't look good with all the wind.

Re: Eagle Rock fire (NE Side of Sitgreave Mt)
It was impressive to watch grown so quickly today. At 10:55 we didn't notice it. At 11:05 we spotted it. By Noon you couldn't miss it. There will be some pics posted by the HAZers that brought their cameras, I suspect.
It shouldn't affect Kendrick. There was a burn between Kendrick and Sitgreaves 2 years ago, so that area will be easy to stop a fires spread within it.

Click on the flagstaff image and you can see just how far the smoke spread since it started at 11 AM today. Well up into Utah and Colorado. Pretty impressive.

Did Elden today,
The Eagle Rock Fire is not as active as yesterday, but it made good progress backing up to the summit of Sitgreaves. Probably won't open up any views, but still might be interesting to look at once the area opens up again.

Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/18/10, 12p.m.
WILLIAMS, AZ – Fire suppression continues today on the Eagle Rock Fire 11 miles northeast of Williams. Firefighters made more progress on extinguishing hotspots and improving fire line during
the evening hours. Structure protection is still in place for many residences in areas of Spring Valley.
Strengthening existing containment lines and constructing direct line along the SW flank of the fire will
be the focus today.
Almost all evacuees have been allowed to return home. County Road141 remains closed to the public between mile 8 and mile 10. Some residents remain out of their homes where fire crews are mopping up. Residents may access their properties via Highway 64 and Spring Valley Road.
A community meeting is scheduled this evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Maine Consolidated School in Parks. On hand to answer questions will be Incident Commander for the Eagle Rock Fire, John Philbin, as well others members of the Northern Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team, and representatives from the Kaibab National Forest and Coconino County.
An emergency fire closure order became effective June 17, 2010 around the fire area. This order is necessary for the protection of the public and firefighters due to ongoing wildfire and fire suppression activities.
Over three hundred personnel are currently assigned to the fire including nine engines, two dozers, four water tenders, and four helicopters. Two air tankers and one Lead Plane are on standby if needed.
Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations. The east side of the lake is closed to fishing. However, it remains open for camping.

Apparently a guy called it in Tuesday evening and got an answering machine. They didn't get the message until they started answering phones mid morning.

I'm thinking the guy should have tried another number. 911 works.

Re: Eagle Rock fire (NE Side of Sitgreave Mt)
What's sad is that there's a chance that a few small crews working overnight could have controlled this fire before it got crazy with the strong wind on Wednesday.
Probably not, but my 20/20 hindsight certainly wonders.
Seriously, who reports a fire on an answering machine?

Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/21/10, 9:00 a.m.
WILLIAMS, AZ – Sunday was a challenging day with the high winds and another new fire in Flagstaff. The Schultz fire required resources be dispatched from the Eagle Rock fire immediately. Over 170 crew members responded including nine engines, two hot shot crews, three type two crews and a fuel crew. The Schultz fire grew to over 3,000 acres in less than five hours. More up to date information may be obtained by calling 928-679-4175.
The Eagle Rock Fire remains at 3,420 acres and is now 60% contained. Total containment is now projected later this next week due to the large amount of resources that were moved to the Hardy Fire and Schultz Fire. The remaining evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes yesterday. Spring Valley Road (County Rd 141) was also reopened Sunday. The Emergency Fire Closure around the immediate fire perimeter remains in effect.
Monday’s plan will concentrate on mop up. This includes increasing containment lines, searching out and extinguishing hot spots or burning embers. They will also be dropping trees that have been compromised or weakened by the Eagle Rock Fire. Residents should be aware of possible hazards in the area. Hazards including falling trees, burning or smoldering stump holes, rolling rocks and boulders, unstable slopes and hill sides. Caution is strongly advised.
The Eagle Rock Fire is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Williams, on the northeast side Sitgreaves Mountain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be lightning.
Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations. The east side of the lake is closed to fishing. However, the campground remains open for camping.

I could see a lot of the burn from Kendrick today. It didn't look bad where I could see it and could be an improvement in a few years.
