Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
Eh, I doubt people have leads of credibility. Who would have gone up the Water Line Rd and noted a vehicles plate and number. People who camped with the person or persons who had the fire are probably culpable since they were present and did not do anything more than the person who started the fire. In the end, these small rewards are mostly PR and not much else. Sell out your friends for $2,500?

Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
The person who stayed behind in our camp while we hiked noted that the fire actually started just east of Schultz Tank, on the SOUTH side of the road, but jumped the road almost right away.Jim_H wrote:Eh, I doubt people have leads of credibility. Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
OK, from the map the FS produced they have a ignition location north of FR 420 by about 500 to 1000 feet and just east of the Water Line RD. They're not always 100% accurate. Isn't it possible that this fire was arson, and that no one will have ever seen anything because the person starting it made every attempt to ensure he wasn't spotted? I have been east of Schultz on the Little Elden Trail, and if you have hiked that area you know its a web of little trails and forest, but that it would be difficult for a car or other vehicle to access the area to camp. I guess there could have been a backpacker, or a person who walked some way from the parking area, but I am thinking arson over carelessness.

Posted a pano photo and a final progression map in the photo section, not sure if they can be zoomed sufficiently to be meaningful. I got them from a friend who is on the fire.

Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
Good picture of the burn area. When it opens, and after some summer rains have produced some green up, I'd like to get out there and drive some of FR 420 and hike some of the effected trails and roads. The huge black area off the peaks on the apron of the mountain was almost all pine. I wonder how grassy that will be now, and in 5 years?Sredfield wrote:Posted a pano photo and a final progression map in the photo section, not sure if they can be zoomed sufficiently to be meaningful. Unless it was an unusually hot fire most of those dead pines will still be standing in 5 years.

Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
Sometimes the area is closed for a long time in the burn area.... part of the Rodeo Chedisky fire (Joe Tank rd don't remember the FR #) the road going from Show Low to FR300 was closed at least a year and maybe 2 before they reopened it....

Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
The Brinns Fire areas was closed for a while. Wasn't it late 2007 before Wilson Mt was open again?
I'm hoping that if the Waterline Rd, and the Little Elden and Little Bear trails don't reopen, that at least FR 420 does so I can drive the area to get a look.

IMPLEMENTATION:
1. This Order will be in effect when signed and shall remain in effect until September 15, 2010 or
until rescinded, whichever occurs first.
2. This Order rescinds, replaces and supersedes any previous Orders prohibiting the same acts

Done at Flagstaff, Arizona, this 13th day of July, 2010
/s/ M.Earl Stewart
M. EARL STEWART
Forest Supervisor
Coconino National Forest
Violations of these regulations is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor, by a fine of not more than $5000 for an individual or $10,000 for an
organization, or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months or both; 16 USC § 551, and 18 USC §§ 3559 and 3571.
Though the new closure order is currently in effect, Forest Service personnel are in the process of repositioning the closure signs according to the new boundaries through today and should be finished by tomorrow.
One of the greatest safety concerns within the fire area is the hazard of dead trees falling over, which will be a safety issue for a long time. In addition, because of the severity of the burn and lack of vegetation, loose rocks are rolling down the hillside posing a safety concern.
The following trails and roads fall under the new reduced closure area:
Schultz Pass Road (FR 420, from Schultz Pass to the north)
Lockett Meadow Road (FR 552)
Waterline Road (FR 146)
Elden Springs Road (FR 556)
Little Bear Trail
Little Elden Trail
Deer Hill Trail
Inner Basin Trail
Lockett Meadow Campground and Little Elden Springs Horse Camp
Fire closures are implemented as standard fire operations procedure for public safety and firefighter safety. This modified closure to public access is in force until September 15, 2010 or later if necessary. The Closure Order and map is at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/nepa/f ... 0-06-f.pdf.
The U.S. Forest Service is still seeking information concerning the person or persons responsible for causing the Schultz Fire. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the Schultz Fire. The Forest Service is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The Schultz fire was caused by a campfire that was abandoned without being properly extinguished in the area of Schultz Tank, Little Elden Trail, and Forest Road 420.
Please call the Schultz Fire Investigations hotline at (928) 527-3508 if you have any information

At least the Weatherford is open now, that seriously makes me happy. Too bad they haven't taken down the closed signs at the saddle, and Freidlein Prairie Road was still closed today as well, which also makes no sense.

Re: Schultz Fire on the San Francisco Peaks
Well, I guess that means the Cirque hike is legally out. Good thing I got that in the day the fire started. Sure, there was a lot of snow up there and the flowers were only just beginning, but I did get to see what I was looking for. Maybe in the fall. BTW I did a loop in the hills yesterday and I noticed the Sunset was open and had some traffic on it.
