2012 Hazolutions

Post by Tortoise_Hiker »

Hey Hazers,
It's that time again.
Let's hear some of your Hazolutions for 2012.
I am going to try and get out and hike with some more Haz hikers that I haven't hiked with and some more with the old ones too! I also want to do lots of hikes I haven't done yet. Oh yeah, and finish the AZT! 9 passages to go. :y:
Now, how about you? :D

My goal is to get through January without trashing my ankle like I did last year! By the time it healed up, it was too damn hot to hike anywhere local. So in 2012 I plan to:

1.) Be kind to my ankle and wear my brace
2.) Be more patient with myself and my abilities
3.) Quit smoking once and for all
4.) Lose the 10 pounds I already have to lose + the additional 10 I know I'll gain from #3
5.) Get back to Utah for my annual trip
6.) Be more sociable and meet more HAZ peeps

Hazzy New Year!

I'm hoping for an incredible wildflower season locally

Ditto the wish for the Tortoise.

You know, incredible wildflower season means "tibbermode", even for you. :)
And I too, while enjoying the solitude of fewer people on the trails, am glad to see the folks out in the fresh air and especially out hiking.

To me every hike is a reward and a goal achieved, my HAZolution is to keep at hiking. I've even added a hike/backpack to my wishlist that wasn't something I really wanted to do but now that I have a few more hikes and backpacks under my belt... Yep, I want to do Havasu Canyon. I've got to see the blue water!
My other wish/goal for 2012 is the Ridgeline and Barnhardt Trail.
Last, is a backpack with Sirena and Wendy to the Spine and Patio (Sirena doesn't know yet ;) ).

Of course, I would like to see some new areas too including the Sierra Ancha and I would love to get back in the Canyon again.

This summer, I hope to make the 14 mile hike and 3000 ft elevation gain by 6PM dinner bell at Sperry Chalet in Glacier Park. :D
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Now I do! Angela, I would be happy to host a "Ladies Night on the Spine"- we could bring our lighted wine glasses :D

As for my plans and goals for 2012, I have a permit to do a solo Escalante Route in the GC that I'm pretty excited about. I look forward to hiking the new AZT passages that have been built since I finished my hike in 09. I will be seeing a lot of Arizona this year via my job working with the Gateway Communities on the AZT and will probably have time for short hikes and overnights when traveling for work. Locally, I am getting close to finishing the trails in the Catalinas and have plans to backpack the elusive Davis Spring Tr. I hope for carpets of wildflowers and a strong monsoon so that Wendy and I can go swimming all summer long. I would like to get off-trail more this year.

:y: So love that idea.

Good luck on your solo Escalante trip. Will look forward to that report! along with yours and Wendy's swimming adventures... especially now that I've seen some of the area.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and Mr. Sirena.

I would like to double my mileage hiked; I have almost 190 miles since July. Seeing different parts of the state would be nice, especially Chihuahua NM and much of the Navajo Nation. My inner sole yearns for the solitude and peacefulness, among the mammals and natural settings for which Arizona offers.

Additionally, I would like to hone in on my photo skills and perhaps invest in some manipulation software. And I'm going to practice my "Gummo" photo taking techniques - so, If you see me crawling on my stomach  It's all for the shot.

Lastly, I will have fun, worry less and be a better spouse and dad. Oh.... and hopefully richer too ;)

Ya, I tried that remedy already. 1,450 steps to Flatiron with quick graduation to each next level and it didn't even begin to make a dent in curing the Addiction. I guess someday I'll have to do the GC and search in earnest for a cure.... ;)

I'd also like to visit as many different regional/state/national parks as possible this year and hike at LEAST 3 miles in each with my boyfriend and daughter :)

Looking back at this....I'm doing pretty good so far!! My little girl has gone more places and hiked and swam and explored and learned things that most children twice her age haven't done!!! I just tackled squaw peak again, first time in 10 years and it was easy, took longer than it should've but I'm not feeling it days later!
We're tackling Supai in June, Humphrey's Peak in July and yosemite in august! i keep forgetting to set aside vacation time for Royal Arch Loop!!! *sigh* NEXT YEAR!!!! There is ALWAYS next year! :D

Doing Royal Arch loop without having done other Canyon hiking may not be the best plan. Havasupai, even to the river, is pretty easy, compared to Royal Arch. I would suggest doing Hermit to Bright Angel, Tanner-Beamer, or New Hance to Grandview--do a couple of those first. Boucher-Hermit is another one to do before you do Royal Arch. Royal Arch is a route, you know, there isn't even a trail a lot of the time. Especially if you go down off Pt Huitzil. And then there is a rappel (which is a total piece of cake if you have done any rappelling in the past, but if you haven't done it for awhile, best to practice up.)

Really not hard. Permits can be hard to come by on weekends, but during the week, not usually hard to get. Or, put in way in advance for it, then you can pick your weekend. Very easy online permit system.
