Trans-Supes hike, November 2nd-5th

Post by te_wa »

this hike starts at Miles trailhead and ends at First Water trailhead, 3 nights, 4 days. 50+ miles of Superstitions paradise.
day 1 is a 10 mile strenuous hike ending for a night at Reavis Ranch
day 2 is a 14-16 mile moderate hike ending at Dripping spring (Fraser canyon)
day 3 is a 10 mile moderate hike ending at Charlebois spring
day 4 is a moderate/easy 9 miles out to First Water

This hike will be physically demanding and is not for the inexperienced... Superstition Wilderness is rugged wild land and if you are up to the challenge of long days and sometimes strenuous hiking, get on in here. IF you have ANY doubts about your ability to finish this hike then you probably shouldnt attend. This is a serious commitment, 50 miles is a long, long way.

Wow this seems like it would be so much fun, and a challenge, something I would definitely like.

But I will be in school so I wont be able to make it. :(

I know that the hike is still a ways away, but I have to arrange some childcare and a cross country flight. So can we drop the gavel on the dates so that the 2 -5 of November can be set in stone? I would like to be able to get by w/o renting a car. Depending on were people are coming and going from the TH I will most likely be stationed in N. Scottsdale. I might be looking for a lift, maybe not, I dunno. I have to start to get things on my end ironed out to make this a go.

Oh,...and it will be a go. There is NO WAY I am missing this one. It has been in the works for seasons. It should be pretty damn cold here in VA by then. Some desert walking would be a proper elixir.

Won't be able to make it. I had to request 3 days off work at the end of Oct, so I don't think they'd like me taking 4 days off the next week. Have fun!

I'm locking in before the bus is full. Nov 2-5, right?

No more than 15 people with 15 heads of cattle, so some people might have to be demoted to cattle status :?

hey yeah, its hunting season in November so whoever draws the shortest straw has to wear a fur coat and strap a tree branch to his hat

I was going to wear a fur coat regardless of which straw I drew. The creepy thing is...I was going to wear ONLY a fur coat.

I'm planning to ask one of my neighbors if they can pick me up at first water on Nov. 5 to avoid the need to drive all the way back to Miles Ranch that day to pick up whatever vehicles might be left there. If anyone wants to leave a car at my place or Wally's in East Mesa, I can see about bundling a ride back. Going out, I was hoping to mooch a ride. I plan to put myself on the commited list as soon as we can get a babysitter committed for Nov. 3.

Sounds like one awesome time but I have a four letter word obstacle called "WORK"~~~~how many days until I can retire? Oh yeah, it's a depressing 5475 days. What a bummer!

If anyone was going to camp out at the Miles TH the night before and it is accessible in a 2WD X-Terra I can bring 4 people out there on Thursday night after I get out of work at 4PM, as long as you don't mind being "cozy" in the back and will fill my tank with gas. Can come and retrieve the same 4 people on the 5th (again, it would be about 5 PM due to WORK) at First Water TH.

That's the best I can offer as a "Chauferette"

:)

Trish,
I'll take you up on 4 spaces if your offer still stands, I'll pay for premium; in both the fuel AND the BEER! Image

Yeppers, my offer stands and my car is now full. I put regular unleaded in my car and don't drink beer but a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio will do nicely. I've PM'd you to work out the details.

I had been thinking of ways to meet and park everybody in a safe place and Ryan came up with this idea:
everyone meet at First Water trailhead on Friday morning. We then pile into a shuttle truck which will take us to Miles trailhead. Come Monday when we arrive back at first water we wont have to wait or arrange a time frame for a ride back home. This is the most reasonable way to allow all of us (8 so far) to enjoy the freedom of going where you need to go- of course carpooling to First Water is up to you.

I think we all need to be at First Water trailhead by 6 am no later!! It will be wise to start hiking from Miles trailhead as early as 7 am. Kurt and crew already have shuttle plans so we'll see them over at Miles'.

Water reports for Reavis look like a large pool at Reavis Gap, some small flows at Fireline intersection, with NOTHING in between. So it looks like we might shorten the first day and take Fireline up to the Ranch. The report also stated that no apples are at the Ranch due to spring frost. :(

In perusing an old USGS map of the area, I note a trail, or, more specifically, TWO trails heading northward out of Pinto Creek, one on either side of, and eventually meeting up at 'Pinto Spring Trough".
The (combined) trail then continues northwest for a-ways and then turns north into 'Log Trough Canyon' and eventually meets up (on PAPER anyway) with the Reavis (Reevis) Trail.

Has anyone traversed this route/trail or know its name?

Thanks!

Kurt is looking at this area
http://hikearizona.com/t2007/10/01/2-26 ... 586-01.jpg

I haven't been to the black and white lined trails you're asking about. They aren't listed on the FS maps. If the listed higher elevation trails are any indication of what you might expect in the lower un-listed trails take a bulldozer. I'd imagine the white ravine trail is worse.

It doesn't look like I can make this. I'm committed to being out for Thanksgiving, and I can't quite do the whole interval.

Please keep me posted on your final route and the condition of water sources. Eventually I'll give this a try.
