Bug Repellent

Post by kajjer »

I will be in Arizona next week. One of the hikes I want to do is "Reavis Falls Hike". I read the recent posts. Thanks for the info and photos. What do you savy hikers do to deter/repel bugs?? Here in Pennsylvania I use Avon skin so soft/bug repellent sun block, spf 15. Sometimes works/bug wise, sometimes not. Thanks...Kevin

100% DEET - "Jungle Juice" @ REI.

Or Wally-World sells 100% DEET as well.

Anything with Deet works great to repel bugs, but on hard hikes and hikes where it is warm, it doesn't take long to sweat it off your skin. In my case, it always ends up in my eyes. So at least my eyes are safe from bugs.

Here's an interesting new development. I haven't tried it myself, but I might be more likely to use it than DEET:

Repellents containing the chemical picaridin or the oil of lemon eucalyptus offer "long-lasting protection against mosquito bites," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, adding that repellents with deet remain on the agency's recommendation list.
