Dripping Springs dripping?

Post by lcozzetti »

Has anyone been to Dripping Springs lately? Is there any water?
I had been there earlier this year and there was plenty of water but I don't know about the autumn and am planning a backpack there in 2 weeks.
Thanks.

In response to lcozzetti's reply:

I was there this weekend and I would guesstimate it's flow rate at about 1 liter per hr. :(

However, about 75 feet W of the actual sping is a small tank covered by a small dead tree that water is seeping into (surrounded by loose sand- a little tricky to reach without pushing a lot of sand into it). If you've got a filter, no problem. It's only about a foot deep at the most, but I pulled a gallon out Sat PM, and another this morning. I'd bet it will still be good next weekend.

Also, I met acquaintainces camping near Dripping Springs on my way out this morning who informed me that there was plenty of water just to the north of DS on the Red Tanks Trail.

Good luck.

In response to DesertDirtDog's reply:
Thanks DesertDirtDog - that's helpful info. Sounds like we should be ok as long as not too many thirsty hikers pass through in the next couple of weeks.

The topic is linked to Dripping Springs... Grand Canyon
I get the feeling not everybody is talking about the same hike here, guess I'll update the name of the hike so it's more clear

Oops, I was refering to Dripping Springs in the Superstitions. I spaced that there is more than one dripping springs (guess in the desert, you'd expect there to be a few with that name)

Base camp was the Wet Beaver Creek Campground, was not at the springs in the morning. Was down to 29 degrees, some small patchs of fog but not much. Air was dry and crisp, walking on dried leaves sounded like I was walking on broken glass. Some of the leaves were quite large at least 10 inches across.

If anyone is heading out to Dripping Springs, Superstitions - a water update would be appreciated. I am planning a backpacking trip out there Feb 18-19.
I know there are a couple other springs out there including Whetstone up in Fraser Canyon and of course, Reeds Water.

Happy Trails,
Angela

Dripping springs was dripping a few weeks ago but its called "dripping springs" for a reason and there wasn't much of a pool to filter from. There's random pools out in that area though. What's your route? I collected some water waypoints when I did the Dripping Springs Super Loop. I'll have to look and see if I still have them, though.

The route I'm planning on is per the Hike Description: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=200 and as far as the Springs it says:
The spring is on the south side of the canyon and literally drips from a fissure in the wall.
I know there can be pools of water in the area too. And really for a one-niter, we shouldn't need that much water at the campsite as we can get some water at Reed's coming and going.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.

Over a year between visits from HAZers, wow! (according to photosets anyways). Looks like a fun one, it's going on my To-do list for sure!

Have fun Tibber, and hey, take a couple of pictures, okay? :sl:
