I am going to hike a loop in the Mazatzals for the first time since the fires and was wondering if the Club Cabin is still there. Has anyone been out there lately?
THANKS

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
Which Mazatzal trail do you remember the CLUB CABIN being off of? I hike in the Mazatzals quite often, and I don't remember passing any cabins..

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
I've never been there, looks like it's somewhere between Davenport and Willow. Seems Chris mentioned somewhere it burnt down but I couldn't find that anywhere. Considering it was the 2004 "Willow" fire, that doesn't sound good.

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
Interesting! This area in the Mazatzal's I have not been too... better suited for a backpack trip due to mileage/remoteness, and these days I am a day hiker only. Do hope you will check it out and report back!

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
I know the lower- and middle reaches of the South Fork of Deer Creek are pretty barbecued. The upper-middle portion of the Gold Ridge Trail are also toasted pretty well.

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
Everything south and west in the vicinity of Mazatzal peak was pretty thoroughly BBQ'ed when I was there. I wasn't nearly that far west, so it's possibly there was a pocket that escaped, but seems unlikely.
Another thing I noticed: The trail is described as faint BEFORE the fire. I'd bet the trail doesn't exist anymore.
Might make for a heroic trip, bring a couple days extra food and water and tell your family you'll be gone for a week. Bring clothes you don't care if you have to throw out when you're done.

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
thanks for reminding me. Chilson Camp was damaged but there is a pocket near Chilson Spring that survived, the spring is actually still productive. I dont recall where I was reading trip reports (off site) but they were sad to say the Cabin was lost. It was very close to where the fires started and was destroyed in the time frame prior to firefighter hotshots engaging the area. Then, to make things worse there was the fire at Summerhaven that "threatened homes" so all the firemen went down there and left the Mazzies to burn. Its still one of my favorite areas in the state and one can surely have solitude on the majority of the trails. The guy who runs the site "todds hiking guide" might have mentioned some interesting falls and canyons just north of the Chilson spring area on the Divide Trail. It sounds worthy of exploration.

Re: Mazatzal after the fire
I havnt been there to check it out but I was told by a forest official after the fire that there wasnt a single tree left standing from the East Verde River to Slate Creek. I have hike Mazatzal Peak twice since the fire and have found plenty of trees in some areas. Maybe they were wrong about the cabin as well...They never want to admit they dont know...

As usual, Joe has the answer before the question existed.
