Reavis Ranch overnighter partners this weekend

Hi there,
I can't talk my wife into hiking this weekend, so I am reaching out to the community here. I am looking to do a 10-15 mile one way hike, staying the night, then coming back in the morning. I am trying to get ready for a 70 mile Pacific Crest Trail hike in late April, and I haven't been doing nearly enough stuff with a backpack on! I was considering Reavis Canyon Trail, because I haven't done it yet. I would like to leave on Saturday late morning from Mesa, and then come back early on Sunday. If you're interested let me know. Weather should be good enough this weekend to go without a tent, my bag can handle the overnight low of 35-40. Hit me back...I've been told I'm good company! -Tyler

Looks like there is a nice spot about 6 miles into this trail. I am COMPLETELY open to other trails if you have something else in mind.

reavis trail canyon sounds ok since ive to finish that section. start at picketpost? we could shuttle from Rogers trough to Picketpost th for an 18 mile section. otherwise, 6-7 miles in and out sounds ok too.

Trail Route Description: From the Picketpost Trailhead the trail proceeds to and then under Highway 60. It climbs and descends to Queen Creek, crosses it and follows a fenceline. It continues on to FR 357 and then crosses a railroad line. It crosses a dirt road, passes under high-tension power lines and then climbs up to a ridgeline and follows it. After passing just east of Barnett Camp the trail enters Whitford Canyon and then crosses FR 650. The trail parallels FR 650 and finally crosses it again and reaches Reavis Canyon Trailhead. It follows this trail (#509) along a streambed and then up towards Montana Mountain. The trail passes south of the peak and then again connects with FR 650. It continues west on FR 650 to FR 172A and then north to the Rogers Trough Trailhead.

Sedona has the Sedona marathon, half marathon and fun runs are all this weekend going out the Dry Creek road. So that end of town will be busy. My husband is running in it. Just a heads up if you are hiking any of those trails on that end of town.

here's an exerpt from Irv's trip report:

The drive to the trailhead always requires high clearance. FR 650 not only crosses creeks several times but for short segments the road is in the creekbed. After a rain, the sand ramps into and out of the creekbed crossings wash away. That can leave a 2-3 foot cliff until quads and offroad vehicles recreate the ramps. Some of the washes have very large flows during and after rains that will wash vehicles downstream--so stay out when water is flowing at more than a trickle.

ya'll know that since it has rained fairly hard four times since November, that road is washed out. I dont have a 12" lift so I doubt Im going to make the drive. Care to do something else, like Reavis Trail or Paradise/Bull basin/West Pinto something along those lines?

I'd bid for a loop around the Four Peaks at just over 20 miles. It's perfect for an overnight, perfect for this time of year, no shuttle necessary and it's likely more interesting than Reavis Canyon.

Might be interested in something else depending on what you guys go with. Under 14 miles per day and something I can't dayhike is my preference but don't plan around me.

Joe, I have been emailing back and forth with Ta-We all day. I think we are going to do Reavis Ranch, and then do some other trails to add mileage. I would like to get between 15-20 miles in. You are MORE than welcome to join us. Should be a good time, I can even drive. I have room for 3 people and their gear. We can meet at my place in Mesa, near Gilbert and Baseline or we can meet on my way out to Tortilla Flats.

Does anybody know the condition of FR 449? I know its essentially a 4x4 road, but im wondering how bad it will be with all the rain

Cool. I'll definitely let you know tomorrow. My girlfriend (ahem...fiance) grudgingly gave me her blessing. She wants me to sit at home, because I am recovering from a cold. I promise I'll be better by Saturday. I took some "medicine" today that is kicking the cold's butt!

Anyway, it all comes down to hearing from my buddy in Tucson. I'm 99% sure our plans will fall through.
