Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday April 13
This one should be a challenge since I'm doing it (as usual) as a dayhike. From the Barnhardt TH, take the Barnhardt Trail up to Mazatzal Divide, south to Y-Bar and back to the TH. Depending on what book you read, its either 14 or 17 miles. I hope its more like 14. I counted the miles on TopoUSA and it was also closer to 14 or so. The elevation gain is about 2600' (based on what I've read). It will obviously be an all day affair, so another pre-dawn 5:30am start should be in order.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday March 16
I clocked it closer to 17. regardless, its a nice hike until you get to Windsor spring/saddle then the trail peters out and becomes very rocky- nothing new right? Just make sure you have an adult beverage after this one.

This wasn't the one you had to spend an extra night out on, was it? I'll definitely do it counter-clockwise so that section is downhill.

I'll know my schedule as we get closer to this date. That weekend starts spring break so I may have that Sunday open.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday March 16
I can give a provisional yes. My roommate and I have done the hike linked below so we're somewhat familiar with the terrain, but in a bad way. I backpacked the Barnhardt Trail when I was in middle school about 20 years ago as well. The only complication is that the downtown Phoenix Saint Patrick's Day celebration is the Saturday before which we were planning on doing. Enjoying Saint Patrick's Day all day Saturday and then doing Barnhardt/Y-Bar on Sunday doesn't sound like a good idea. We'd be 100% in for any other weekend, but I'm not the one organizing any hikes. This loop is definitely on the list of hikes I need to do.

Looks like you may have to offer a free beer at the end of the hike to get more people signed up. ;-)

I will be having a good time with my friends Flogging Molly on St. Patty's Day. Plenty of beer then.

Beware of an abundance of boardshorts, polo shirts and flip-flops worn by annoying, boisterous, belligerent college kids. I know several of them who will be there. ;-)te-wa wrote:I will be having a good time with my friends Flogging Molly on St. Patty's Day. Plenty of beer then.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday March 16
righty-o then.
but i hope your cool young punk rocker/yuppie (is there such a thing?) realize that Flogging Molly is a pretty big skin band. I wonder if the skins will be there. some might, I suppose.
Im actually unable to go now, so Im selling the tics.
also, i would go on this hike but I'll be on a fishing trip.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday March 16
sounds interesting - the waterfall picture is great i would like to know how to get there -----
i might go and maybe take two more people with me!
So what happens when you get enough people to go - do any of you car pool or rent a van or something - or is this kind of like "oh you're interested and you're going oh great and thats it -- (do you meet somewhere?)

All who are on the "Committed" list contact one another (or will be contacted by me) a few days before to confirm transportation, where to meet, etc.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday March 16
For example: If five people commit Stiller would set up a time and place to meet that morning. We might meet at a Home Depot and decide from there whether we all fit in one vehicle or two. If the driver of the second car doesn't know the way.. they follow. Same with the hike, If you don't know the route stick with the group. We do a head count at the end and havn't left anyone behind yet.Katrina07 wrote:sounds interesting - the waterfall picture is great i would like to know how to get there -----

Unfortunately I have to cancel because I have to go to a bachelor party on Saturday afternoon/night. I don't think a 17-miler the day after this one would be a good idea.

Re: Barnhardt/Y-Bar Loop, Sunday April 13
I've decided to postpone this one back a few weeks due to the weather forecast for tomorrow. Previous commitments prevent me from doing it any sooner, unfortunately. More time then for anyone else to change their minds or hop on the bandwagon.
