Del Shay Trail #41, Sunday May 24

Post by DarthStiller »

From the writeup and few triplogs, this one seems pretty rugged and hard to follow, but also very nice in terms of scenery. It seems as though there's also alot of history in this area. 13.5 miles RT and 2800' AEG. It's Memorial Day weekend, so there will be an extra day to recover if it's real rough.

I've changed my mind on doing this one (for this year, probably). After the bushwhack up the Sycamore Trail, I prefer to hike on more of a normal trail that involves considerable less route finding, especially at this time of year when everything is overgrown. I'll probably end up in the McDowells or in Santan park that weekend.

I recently got into the Del Shay Basin from my parked vehicle in about 1.5 hours. I previously tried many times to get into the basin unsuccessfully as it is rugged, remote and off trail/bushwak hiking is required. However, the basin is beautiful, probably more so due to its solitude. Note that my path in is not off the #41 trail Further, once you exit the vehicle, it is all off trail. So, you need a GPS unit and confidenc in your navigation skills. When I entered, I went to the cabin and confirmed the spring was running. Post if you want info on my route.

You could just post the route. I'm sure several would be interested in the future even if not now.

Joe: I am new and need to learn how to post routes. Also, where would I post this as it is not trail 41. In fact there is no trail at all. It's a great hike and the shortest way into Del Shay which is a very tough place to get into. What is the best way to learn to post routes on HAZ?

You can post it as a "Generic" route. If it follows a trail on HAZ I'll get it linked for you, if not I'll create it after I see it.

All you need to post a route is a file. Typically with Garmin it's a .gdb file. Several other files are listed on the posting page, link was in my previous post. If you have broadband this video may help a little vid/posting/index1.php
