Rock Creek Trail-Mazatzal Backpack-Spring 2011

Post by PrestonSands »

What? An overnight backpacking trip on the Rock Creek Trail in the Mazatzals, on the weekend of March 26-27. Camp among the pines at Horse Camp Seep, perhaps? It's rough but beautiful country. And there are waterfalls... ;)

My wife has spring break usually the 3rd week of march. It's still a big "IF" for me, though.

St Patties Day is generally waterfall city for the Mazzies. Probably still good through the first week of Apr. However, it's been so dry there can't be much base this year. Hopefully some big storms will pound everything but Peeley and Sheep Mountain before Mar-Apr. It's unlikely I can make it. I joined interested on the slim chance angle.

First/last weekend March or the first/last weekend Of April. I work the middle of both months so I'm interested if the final decided dates fall when I'm in Az. Find the best dates for the most interested and I'll join if I can. :) Looks like a good group of interested individuals.

Thinking about heading up to AZ around the first week of March. Not quite ready to click "Interested," but if I'm back home then I'll be there for at least a dayhike portion.

Does the original posted date of March 26-27 work for those who are likely to come? If so, then we'll do it that weekend.

Sounds like fun, I think the end of March would be best, first part of the month can still get frigid up there...dont know if I am in good enough shape to make the entire trek but would consider a partial...

Hey David, dayhikers are welcome to join, too. Looks like we have a good group building for the overnight. 8)

I did quite a bit of brush clearing, cairning, and marking up to the 5600 foot level last March, so hopefully that stretch of trail will be smooth sailing.

Hey Preston, any thoughts on doing a shuttle? Come back down North Peak or Sandy Saddle/Barnhardt?

The trail to Sandy Saddle from Horse Camp is horrible...right Preston? I would like to the top of the 7500 foot peaks just south of the saddle, they are the most lush place in the mazzy's... :o

Sandy Saddle: I believe I'll pass on that trail. ;) North Peak: possibly...does anyone else have a preference?

We learned the hard way about Sandy Saddle, didn't we? :D That's not even a canyon anymore, let alone a trail.

I definitely want to go to the top of the 7500 foot peaks, though. :)

Okay, I haven't been to Sandy Saddle since '04 and the Willow fire :(
Going up the 7500 foot peaks sounds like a great idea.
