grassland, chaparral, woodland, and montane forests of southern Arizona, southern New Mexico; Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico
Flowers
2 inches wide, usually reddish-purple, but occasionally orange or yellow; followed by edible, fleshy, yellow fruit
Description
up to 8 feet tall, branching; spines usually a pale grey color; during cold weather, plants often turn a purplish color

tends to hybridize with Staghorn Cholla (Cylindropuntia versicolor)
