| no partners | | Hadn't hiked in Madera Canyon since late last summer, since I only really like it in the warm months (especially July-September). I picked this day because it promised some weather drama. I figured if I made it to Josephine Saddle and felt good at that point, I might try to head up to Wrightson, weather permitting. Well the weather wasn't permitting and I didn't feel strong enough anyway, so I decided to just wander around and explore the lower elevations. It was a combination of parts of Old Baldy and Super Trail, with some bushwhacking and a side trip over to the Kent Spring Road by way of Rogers Rock and Pipeline. Heard the first thunder while at Josephine Saddle, as storms were building in from the south. This first wave of activity didn't do much, which allowed me more time to explore. Got pretty cool and there was about half hour of steady thunder, but all of it was from in cloud lightning, so no scare factor, with just a few drops of rain. By the time I got back to the parking lot, things were pretty quiet. Driving out of the canyon however, I could see another wave of activity overtaking the mountains. This one was the real deal and generated a very strong outflow with 40 to 50 mph winds and heavy blowing dust as I headed home on I-19. |
