Also known as the Mazatzal Peak Quartzite

Age Precambrian

Distribution
Predominantly in the northern Mazatzal Mountains. Also in the Pine Creek/Tonto Natural Bridge area, and Christopher Mountain near Kohl's Ranch. The Mazatzal Quartzite also forms the actual peaks of Four Peaks.

Description
Predominantly quartzite. The lower Mazatzal Quartzite (or "red member") is of a reddish or reddish-pink color and contains abundant wave ripples. The upper Mazatzal Quartzite (or "white member") is of a whitish color and is cross-bedded. The total thickness of the entire formation in the Mazatzal Mountains can vary from 1300 feet to 1600 feet.

Comments
The Mazatzal Quartzite is a part of the Mazatzal Group, which consists of (oldest to youngest): Deadman Quartzite, Maverick Shale, and Mazatzal Quartzite. The Mazatzal Quartzite rests conformably atop the Maverick Shale and is extremely hard and resistant to erosion. The Mazatzal Quartzite is thought to have been deposited in a coastal delta that later transitioned into a terrestrial river delta environment.
