Cardinalis sinuatis

Common Names: aka Desert Cardinal
Habitat: arid brush, thorn scrub & mesquite.
Description: Males are Overall gray with a bright red-tipped crest, red mask, throat, breast, belly and edges of wings and tail. Stout yellow bill. Dark eyes. Females are similar but lacking red on face, throat, breast & belly. Female bill is gray to dull yellow. Juveniles are similar to female with a dark gray bill.
Comments: In the same genus as the Cardinal with a similar loud crisp song and single metallic "chip" call. Female Northern Cardinal is buff brown with a red bill. All info sourced from Birds of Arizona Field Guide by Stan Tekiela.
