SEA URCHINS
The fossil history of sea urchins (echinoids) dates back 500 million years. Echinoids have skeletons made of five-fold rows of calcareous plates with pores between them. Spines are used both for movement and defense. Complete fossils are fairly rare since the skeletons fall apart after death, leaving just separated plates and spines.
Echinoderm means 'spiny skin'

not plants but animals, sea lilies (crinoids) are related to sea urchins and sea stars, and have a similar five-fold structure. Many have long, flexible stems rooted in the seabed. At the top of the stem is a cup and feathery arms. The cups are made of calcareous plates held together by skin.
