Despite Antietam Creek being as narrow as 50 feet wide, and only waist deep, Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside tried to force the Union IX Corps across this one narrow span. One Confederate regiment on the opposite bluff was able to hold them off for 3.5 hours.
