| no partners | | My hike is a shorter version of the hike in the description here. My adventure was an out and back hike from a different starting point and the hike described is a shuttle with a lot more difficult hiking along Sycamore Creek.
I started the day with plans A and B. This was plan B which I preferred because I had not hiked this part of Sycamore Creek before and wanted to do it. I was hoping to keep my boots dry but this was impossible so I did parts in knee deep water. Also did some rock climbing, boulder hopping, scrambling and bushwhacking along the way. This is not an easy hike for those who might be interested.
I started by making a left turn off the Beeline (87 north) at the Topless sign and made a U turn on the dead-end road and parked on the left about 1/4th mile in from 87. Then I hiked along the barbed wire fence for 1/4th mile to the second underground tunnel on the left that is the Arizona trail (also the Sunflower trail). It is also possible to park on FR22 at the road barrier and hike to the same trail intersection which adds an additional crossing of Sycamore creek. After getting by the barbed wire fence I hiked the AZT for 1/2 mile to its intersection with the Boulder Creek trail (also the AZT) and hiked that for 1.6 miles to the Sycamore Creek crossing there. This is a very nice area as the creek enters a canyon and continues west for 1 mile before making a 90 degree left turn and continuing south. My hike took me to about 0.2 miles past the left turn going south down the creek where I had lunch and turned back.
This is a beautiful but difficult hike and I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. There were campers down below off of the Boulder Creek trail but absolutely no other hikers on my trails all day. |
