We stayed in Flagstaff the night before to get acclimated to the elevation and we needed it! At 4 am we headed to the trailhead. At about 5 am we started our trek. It was hailing out and a couple of hikers were already on there way down and one of them informed us that it was pretty nasty at the summit but we were determined to keep going. After about 2 hours of some pretty harsh hiking we reached the saddle and we could really begin to feel the change in elevation. At this point the weather was starting to calm down but it was getting pretty windy due to the elevation. I read about this hike months before we attempted it and all anyone talked about was the false summits which we experienced right after leaving the saddle. There must have been about 3 or 4 peaks that we thought were Humphreys only to find out we were wrong. About 20 minutes before we reached the summit it was extremely windy and cold and the elevation was taking its toll. Once we finally reached the summit it was worth everything. A true 360* view of Arizona and a feeling of being on top of the world (or state) was worth it all. As everyone who has done this trail knows, there is a box at the summit with paper in it so you can sign your name to claim that you made it. After writing our names and eating some lunch we decided to head back down. It was about 8:45 am and the trail was much more crowded and full of hikers asking if we had made it all the way. After a grueling trek back down we beat the infamous afternoon Flagstaff rain and felt as if we had accomplished something big. I would recommend this hike to anyone who likes challenging trails and doesn't mind the rain at times. Bring lots of water and snacks and make sure to wear worn in shoes. |
