I had a few hours before a wedding in Temecula and wanted to get out to enjoy the pretty surroundings. I found the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Preserve and decided to check it out. You can get information on the preserve here: http://www.riversidecountyparks.org/loc ... a-plateau/

There are lots of intersecting trails in this 8,300 acre preserve. There are three or so largish, unpaved parking lots at a few trailheads. The trailhead for this is about four miles past the visitor's center. The people in the center were really nice and helpful in mapping out a nice hike for me. It costs $2 for day use for anyone over 13. You can pay in the center or at little kiosks at the trailheads.

I went at about noon on a Saturday and there were tons and tons of people. However, I couldn't blame them because the wildflowers were poppin'! There weren't many on the small, one mile loop around the adobes house (though there were lots of people eating lunch at the house). This was a really neat, wooded area. I heard there were California newts but I didn't see any.

In sum, a great way to spend a few hours!
