We started at 6:40 a.m. on the South Kaibab trail, connected to the Tonto trail, the back to the South Rim on the Bright Angel trail. After numerous stops along the way the hike consisted of 14 miles, and took us 9 hours. Other than almost hitting a heard of elk just outside of the Canyon the trip was perfectly normal and smooth. At the top of the Bright Angel trail there was some snow and ice remaining from a long winter here. With it being free admission day to the Canyon it was packed with tourists. The weather was perfect, sunny, and barely a breeze. The temps ranged from a low temp of 29 at 6:30 a.m. and reached 85 at 1:25 pm. The Colorado River had the consistency of chocolate milk.
