| no partners | | We knew that such a cool day in late April was a gift. So my friend, Chris, and I decided to try reaching Superstition Peak via Carney on April 22nd. On April 13th, we failed at our first attempt at the peak from the Hieroglyphics trail via balanced rock. We traveled that route maybe 3/4 of the way to the peak before turning around - the concern being time.
Both of us had been on the Carney trail to West Boulder Saddle before. So we knew what to expect for the climb to the ridgeline. As we had read on several triplogs, the ridgeline is well cairned. However, we were not expecting such difficulty in spots - especially the steep climb out of a wooded ravine about half way from the saddle to the peak. The ridgeline has areas of steep loose rock that made us test our lungpower going up and forced us to all fours for the slide down.
The weather cooperated - albeit cool and windy on the ridge. We only experienced a few raindrops on the way back down - about a quarter-mile from the trailhead. We saw no other hikers on the ridgeline or up and down Carney.
All in all, a great hikearizona experience! |
