Camped up there Sat nite, only a couple of people camped out in the pines, then went to Centella Point, Fly Peak and a loop using the bear wallow trail. Ran out on the Crest trail toward the high point then decided to go back ( forgot lunch). Tree fall and some snow still. Lost the Centella Point trail and cross countried a short distance to the trail in the old burn area. Ran into about 20 illegals on the crest trail. Brian was ahead of me so I encountered them after him. No problems. The "coyote" I supposed, spoke english and tried to be a little intimidating toward me but that didn't last long. Look 'em in the eye and speak short and be firm. Most people will back off and so did he.
Views hazy out of Centella Point. Springs all running well and things starting to green up. We also stopped and hiked up a small drainage full of small waterfalls over rock as we drove on toward Portal. Topped the day off by visiting an old friend of Brian's near Rodeo New Mexico.
Good to hike in the pines. |
