Rustler Park in better times! Shawn posted an event on Arizona Hikers for a weekend of camping/hiking in the Chiricahua Mountains. Since I live in Tucson, I headed down early on Friday the 12th to secure the group spot, then waited for the rest to show up from the Phoenix area. I didn't know anyone yet, as it was my first time hanging out with them. People arrived at various times throughout the evening, some delayed by a crash on I-10 that closed down the freeway for awhile. Shawn got there first and proceeded to go out and cut a big supply of firewood. As the evening gave way to night around the fire, food, drink, and good times were enjoyed. Finally, very late the last of the expected guests arrived. This is the one that I accused of being a "Scottsdale soccer mom," because of her grand entrance and ordering me to help put up her tent! :o None of us was feeling any pain by that time, so we were slow to react.

Saturday morning we nursed our foggy brains, then headed out on the feature hike to Flys and Chiricahua Peaks along the Crest Trail. I wasn't sure how I would do, since I was still hampered by what I thought was a bad sprain of my left ankle that I suffered faliing off the Old Baldy Trail just below Baldy Saddle on a Wrightson hike back on August 6th. As I was falling, the ankle got caught in a tree root and the damage was done. I was training for a hike up Wheeler Peak when that happened. Turns out I somehow was able to get up both Antero in Colorado and Wheeler within a month of the injury, but not without a lot of pain and difficulty. I ended up having a lot of trouble on this hike as well, with it taking me a long time to make it back on the home stretch from Long Park to camp. I skipped going up to Flys Peak, but some of us did a short side trip to the Cima Cabin. (I finally went to a doctor after this trip and found out I had a fracture of my fibula, which is why it was still giving me grief. It healed up in its own way and gives me no trouble today).

There still were of lot of late monsoon season wildflowers to be enjoyed, which made the flower photographers very happy. :)

After the hike we enjoyed another great evening of food, drink and "spirited" conversation around the fire, while getting rained on from time to time. Fortunately not enough rain to make the group want to lynch the weatherman. Sunday morning as we were having breakfast, nursing a few more hangovers, and slowly packing things up to leave, the silence was broken when a certain someone's car alarm went off! :o For some reason we were unable to get it turned off. It went on long enough for a bunch of nearby campers to drive away in disgust. :x The "ultimate drama queen" had struck again! :sl: Thus ended a very, very entertaining weekend in the Chiricahuas (to say the least).
