| no partners | | Heading up Lanphier Canyon, alongside a bubbling brook, we ended up near Franz Spring for the night. There were horsepackers camping near the spring. There is also a corral and cute log cabin near the spring which belongs to the grazer. We situated ourselves away from them on top of a rise, which was probably warmer the next morning than being down by the spring.
Second day we made our way across Campbell Flat to Bear Valley and Little Blue Creek. This creek does dry up later in the summer, which is why we did this trip in early summer. Later in summer I am told water is to be found downstream. We hiked up Bear Valley, following Little Blue Creek until the creek started to dry up, and camped. Acres and acres of flat ground. A couple of the people in my group then dayhiked up to Bear Mtn. Since we were down in a hole, temp was in the 30's when we woke up. As soon as the sun started coming up it warmed up very quickly, though.
Third day we got up and hiked up toward Bear Mtn. and then down Largo Canyon. The creek in this canyon dries up later in the season but Maple Spring and Dutch Oven Spring are reliable. The canyon is beautiful, with maple trees along it. I have also seen it in the fall, when it's very pretty.
Both Largo and Lanphier Canyons are reached from the same trailhead, 22 miles down the Blue Road from Luna Lake in Alpine. They both make good dayhikes. Hiking to Bear Mtn. from Largo Canyon and Telephone Ridge can also be a dayhike, although it is fairly tough, about 14 miles round trip. The guys said there wasn't much of a view, though. |
