| no partners | | A friend of mine came in from Northern Illinois and wanted to do some hiking and camping in Southern Arizona while he's here so I suggested that we try something close to home. We spent the night at Spencer Campground. No rain but since it had downpoured earlier, everything was damp. The dry wood that I brought for a campfire even had trouble burning because of all the dampness in the air.
My friend is a seasoned hiker originally from this area, but has had some knee injuries that still bother him so we decided upon an easy hike. Besides, this was the closest fire lookout structure to me, and I haven't visited this year since it had opened (I did do an earlier visit when there was still a lot of snow on the ground). I usually do the loop down the Lemmon Trail and up the Meadow Trail, but with his knees, we decided to take the less steep route down on the Meadow Trail and back up the Lemmon Trail.
The lookout, Dave, is in his rookie year. He admitted that he called in four campground fires before he learned where all the designated camping areas were. He also said that the night of August 1 would be his last night up there - they were shutting it down for the season, so it's a good thing I got up there when I did!
Easy peasy leisurely hike - just what the doctor ordered. |
