| partners | | I was originally thinking Highland Mary Lakes for this weekend, but the more I thought about it (esp recently coming back from Glacier) the more I wanted to do an alpine lake below treeline since it'd be much more scenic and this lake made a great backup plan. Not the same Crater lake that AHOTE, Tewa, and company recently did but their triplogs did help me decide in switching locations.
Such an amazingly beautiful hike that starts at 10,700ft alongside an alpine lake that's popular with families & fishermen. It quickly starts climbing up to a ridge as we start gasping for oxygen though are rewarded with sweeping views of jagged peaks, thru thick sections of firs, past meadows & marshes, and eventually leading you to an even sweeter view of another alpine lake up at 11,500ft. The lake was a tad popular this weekend, so before finding a spot we climbed further up to the upper lake & pass to see the view down into the canyon of the Animus River. On the way back down, we found an awesome spot and setup my new sweet BPing tent before heating up dinner and calling it a night. It was a little windy at night but surprisingly it wasn't too cold that morning as we broke down camp and had to eventually leave that amazing alpine lake and sweet views... We made fairly short work of the hike back now that we were more acclimated to the altitude and it was mostly downhill. |
