| no partners | | I started late - noon - and took the hard way up. Straight up. Rocks from pebble size to car-door size rolled and moved and slid underfoot as I scrambled towards Echo Pass. When I finally neared the summit, I discovered a low wall and a trail. I felt like a dolt, but was intrigued. I climbed up to the southern prominence, took a break, and then headed back down the trail I had discovered. The vertical distance that took me 3 hours to climb took me one to descend, but the mileage was much greater coming back; the ascent was 1.67 miles and I gained 1300 feet, most of that in the .75 miles. Sweet views, and I think I can figure out a route from the pass down and over to a saddle and actually get on top of the peaks.
HOT hike. Drank a lot and still didn't have enough. Pounded .5L at the truck, hit the trail with 5 liters (3 water, 2 of electrolyte drink). Ran out of H20 just below the big switchback on the way down, drank the last electrolyte drop before hitting the Shinarump. Dry hot hike back to the truck where I'd cached some more water, thankfully. |
