ToadOfTheRocks
Liz and myself had planned to hike Spencer Trail to the top of the ridge, and proceed from there along the ridgeline to Dominguez Pass and back down to the Paria River. We both had an eye on the weather, and decided to play it by ear. Joined by John (ToadOfTheRocks), we started up the trail in slightly chilly weather at about 8:30am. We reached the crest, after numerous stops to catch our breath/take pictures, after about two hours. The views were astonishing and the clouds had cleared, so we took a snack break and poked around for a little while. John and I spend much time thinking about the Echo Peaks. I have long plotted to gain the summit. I failed from the south - sheer cliffs. I have carefully examined the west side many times. From the top of Spencer, we had a great view of the northern slope. It looked...possible. The enormous sand slide is something that has stopped me from making a serious attempt from the north though (that, and the river crossing). We thought about heading east, but since Liz and John hadn't loaded my track into their GPS (and I, for all intents and purposes, don't have one), we decided to descend and do something else for the rest of the day. I think some of us weren't feeling in top form, either. The descent was relatively quick with clouds and wind moving in. The idea of going down the Dominguez sand slide sounded less fun with the wind blowing in our faces. At the truck, we popped some sodas and chatted with Mike, Liz's friend who is a volunteer for NPS at Lee's Ferry. It was just about lunch time, so we headed on over to VC for some lunch and to reconsider plans. We had thought about going up to the Sunrise Mine on the eastern face of the cliffs, but the blowing wind made us decide for Cathedral Wash. Back in the rides and then down the road again...
