The days approaching this event weren't as exciting for me as I had anticipated... I had spent two days in Hart Prairie scouting for color and it didn't deliver the way I had hoped. All of the best color had "private property" or "no trespassing" signs in the foreground. I drove fr151 and its tributary roads countless times, hoping some amazing aspen grove would jump out at me. I hiked to Bismark Lake and sections of the AZT searching for something promising, but the color was patchy at best.

By the day of the workshop I was still debating with myself over where to shoot, and at the last minute, right before booking it to Safeway, Jake and I decided on a large meadow at the north end of fr151 for sunset that evening.

That's when the fun began. :D

The plan once everyone arrived at camp was to set up tents, hike the Bismark Lake trail in the afternoon, and then go to our meadow in the evening. Setting up camp proved to be much too enjoyable though, and we ended up socializing during our allotted Bismark Lake time. No big deal... Once we were good and ready we high-tailed off to the meadow.

The meadow was a beautiful evening location, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the original compositions everyone found. Being compositionally narrow-minded myself, I've certainly benefited from seeing the photosets from this trip. So many shots I would not have thought of! It was fun observing everybody's different styles of photography... Some focus on the grand scene, some are more detail-oriented, some went off searching for hidden gems, etc. Amazing how watching something as simple as a person taking photos can give such insight on their personality. ;)

As both sun and temperature lowered, people started to move back to the vehicles. Unfortunately for a few of them, I was driving one of the shuttle trucks. My sincerest apologies to those piled in the bed of my truck on the way back... I tend to drive like a madman down dirt roads, and for some reason the thought of what might be going on back there while I swerved around potholes didn't cross my mind until it was mentioned after the drive. I'll pay for any subsequent chiropractor bills, promise!

As has been mentioned already, camp was a blast. Chumley wins MVP for the weekend for his amenities. He has truly perfected the art of car camping and definitely made everyone's stay comfortable and relaxing. For food we had chili, green chili stew, and cake. Of course, the artistic theme of the weekend continued as we enjoyed some fine craft brews. There were some great conversations and good laughs around the fire, along with a few performances on the guitar. Basically, it was everything car-camping should be, plus more!

Overall, I had an amazing time! Thanks everyone for coming out; I loved spending the weekend with all of you.

***As for the next one... Although this one was an absolute blast, I do hope we can pull off some more structured teaching next time. I know people came ready to learn, and I felt rather guilty afterward... This was more of an informal sharing of ideas and some general Q and A- not exactly what you would expect in a "workshop" atmosphere. But, it can only get better from here. I guarantee the next one will be at LEAST as fun, and you'll be able to leave with a ton of new artistic ideas and technical knowledge. Second time will be a charm (if the 1st wasn't already). ;)
