HAZ Fall Photo Workshop Day 1

I wanted to re-name this event the "HAZ Green Aspen Photo Workshop". :sl: Still turned out to be a great event!

Started out the day throwing together some camping gear at the last minute. Grabbed an extra sleeping bag from my parent's house and then met up with Joel for some last minute scouting in Hart Prairie. We were determined to incorporate some yellow aspens into a good sunset location, and found what turned out to be an easily accessible spot! We raced back into town to meet up with most of the gang at Safeway, then headed back out into the woods to find a camping spot.

The plan was to meet up with the Kachina hikers near the Bismark Lake TH and find a campsite around there. Imagine the disbelief we had when we saw cars lining the road and a sign indicating a wedding! I was a little scared that we weren't going to find a campsite a that point. Of course, the next side road provided a perfect big group site, complete with a pre-built fire ring!

The Kachina ladies showed up a few minutes later as tents were being staked. Camp was soon established, followed by folks making introductions, chit chat and popping open beers. Jon and his crew trouble in the I-17 traffic hell, and showed up a bit later. They quickly through up tents and then it was off to shoot!

Our meadow was across of 151 from the short road to C. Merriam Hart's historic campsite. It provided some token yellow aspens and plenty of room for people to explore. Photographic tips and tricks were exchanged, as well as a hefty dose of humor. Snow capped Humphrey's rose in the distance, and copious pictures were snapped. The light changed marvelously, and with the luck of some clouds, we had a nice little sunset, complete with the setting of a beautiful crescent moon.

As the light grew dim, we piled back into the trucks and plowed back to camp. Somewhere in the mix I lost my cable release, only to realize it at an inopportune time later :( . Fortunately for the rest of us, Todd was smart enough to gather a good lot of fire wood, so he quickly established a raging inferno. Jon soon started making his gourmet chili. My friend Chuck was shooting up a Bismark Lake, and stopped by to chat for a while. Being Jon's birthday, Jody unleashed a chocolate cake for dessert. It was decided that cake and camping are a good combination.

As various varieties of alcohol were consumed by the others, I was itching to experiment with shooting star trails. Todd and Kai joined me for a relaxing walk up to Bismark Lake in the dark. Upon reaching the "lake", I realized my cable release was nowhere to be found. Star trails were now impossible, but we stuck around to star gaze and enjoy the night. About five shooting stars were witnessed before we started getting chilly and decided to head back to camp.

Upon returning to camp, more of Jon's friends had arrived to celebrate his birthday. It was definitely a party. About 1AM, I forced myself to hit the hay, after an exciting day of shooting, conversing, eating, joking and celebrating.
