| no partners | | We didn't have enough time to drive far enough for a hike in cooler climes, so we decided to do some wandering in the Bulldog OHV area toward what appeared to be a path through from west to east. Although the temps weren't super high to start with and the sky was semi-overcast the first part of the hike, the humidity made it almost brutal. Still, once we set off with a goal in mind there was no turning back.
With no trail to follow it sure made use of our skills of finding the easiest route as straight as the terrain allowed, which in this case it was nothing near straight. Still, it was a good exercise in learning new tricks of trail blazing.
Once we got close to our destination it appeared we may not have the skills nor equipment to get up into the gorge, but upon closer inspection we located a narrow pat. Initially the exposure gave pause, but once we set our minds (and kept looking forward instead of down) on it, it was a piece of cake. We continued onward and upward into the gorge hoping to locate a "south eastern passage" through. Instead we found a deep pool of relatively stagnant water that was swarming with bees and wasps. We probably could have tried climbing up a steep slope to get around the pool, but due to time constraints we turned back, leaving it for "another day".
It was probably a good thing because on the return trip the sun came out in full force to add to the already high humidity. Having learned more trail blazing skills on the way out, we chose a much easier and quicker, albeit longer route back to the car.
