| no partners | | I decided since the weather was so nice that rather than going to my 4:30 Strength Class which I can do when the weather is hot, I would find a good hike to do. I haven't been here since 2008 and the mileage is such I can get it done before dusk.
They've improved the parking and the TH area very nicely from what I can recollect. The bottom part of the trail was fairly busy but not too bad. I probably ran into a dozen hikers on my way up to the Saddle (775 feet elev gain, 1.25 miles or so)in 45 minutes. When I got to the Saddle I looked out and immediately saw the MetLife blimp flying in front of Camelback Mtn. I saw the blimp on my Tom's Thumb hike two weekends previous. And yesterday on the east side 101 going north, I saw the blimp parked at a complex just to the west of the Casino.
I caught my breath, took some movies, went part way up the mountain to the south of me... looks like you can go even further than I did so I'll do that next time and then I headed up the steep incline to the top of Peak 2429 which Scout measured at 2421 feet after I stood on a rock. There were some butterflies fluttering so that was pretty neat.
The views from there are simply astonishing as to all that you can see including deep into the Supes, Picketpost, the McDowells, Skull & New River Mesa, Lookout & North Mountains and Shaw Butte, the White Tanks, The Estrellas and South Mountain as well as a wondeful view of Camelback. I was able to point out a lot of it to a couple folks who were up on the top. One of the hikers showed me a path down the north side of the mountain...I thot it would continue in a north direction which it does but dead ends at the top of the mountains that run north-south. So you just get to wrap around and back to the Saddle rather than heading down from there. Nonetheless, it is a less steep drop from the top of the Peak.
There was hardly any people traffic as I made haste (once I was down on flatter ground) back to the TH at 5:30.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
