| no partners | | There were 6 of us from the Forest Service on this hike. Extra mileage is from off-trail exploring. The entire route is in very good shape. The eastern part of the Bluff Springs Trail used to be pretty choked, but a crew came in last spring and cleared it, so this was a completely scratch-free trip. Kinda nice for a change.
La Barge Creek has running water in many spots and the spring was flowing fast. I sure hope we get some good rain pretty soon. Things are really drying up out there and I still haven't done my water hikes for the season.
Coming back on the Dutchman, we were keeping an eye out for the giant saguaro. Even so, 5 of us would have walked right by it if Lou hadn't pointed it out. Now I know how a lot of people miss seeing it (like I did coming from the other direction last year). Although it's right in plain sight all by itself, it's a ways off the trail and uphill just enough to miss catching your eye. There's a use trail on the north side that takes you to it. It is absolutely huge and quite spectacular. I wonder how old it is.
I think I was the youngest one in the group, yet I found myself bringing up the rear much of the time. These folks are hiking machines, I tell you. I need to get out more often. |
