I'm so grateful to the amazing people that pioneer places like this, to those that have helped me to grow skills that allow me to play in places like this one and the invites I have received to tag along. This canyon moves to the TOP of my list of Arizona Jewels!
Illusions has 14-15 raps, a few slides, lots of down climbing, a few jumps, corkscrew narrows, some mind blowing arches, dark caverns, lots of keepers, and ultra chilly swims. In fact, this was probably the most water/swimming I have ever experienced in a canyon. I noticed that parts of my body were shivering that I didn't know could shiver It's possible that my 3/2 wetsuit wasn't warm enough. The longest rap was 120 feet and the exit is through the always gorgeous West Fork of Oak Creek. All keepers were full and carcass free . I believe this was the perfect time of the year to be in the canyon.
This was an excellent start to my summer vacation! I'm feeling like I have become so spoiled by the canyon gurus in my life. Each trip is more amazing than the last. I spent 2 nights camping in the cool pines, was treated to late night gourmet pizza cooked over the campfire by a master chef, experienced the most amazing canyon ever, narrowly escaped 4000 leeches, safely delivered a lost & frantic hiker to the trailhead, and enjoyed time with some of the best "Canyon Beasts" I know! Thank you Eric
* just a guess on the amount of time it took to do the canyon. We lounged, changed out of our wetsuits and ate for about an hour of this time at the confluence of the two canyons. More flowers along the exit trail than a couple of weeks ago. |
