I left my camera in my overnight pack and resorted to using my Iphone. So I arrived at upper Tonto creek around 6:30 AM. It was a pleasant 59 degrees. It looked like there had been a lot of rain the night before as all of the campers along tent row had extra tarps draped over their tents and no fires were going. The ban has been lifted in that camping area. I dropped my mountain bike off at the Hatchery parking lot and locked it to the trail sign. Then I spent about an hour fly fishing in the upper section of Tonto catching a few small streambred rainbows. From there I drove my truck down to the bridge by Horton campground and parked. I set off up Horton Springs trail and only saw two people the whole way up to the springs. I looked at my watch for the date and yes it is Saturday. I think most people aren't aware the area is open again. The trail was a bit muddy in spots and the dusty areas were pitted indicating a recent downpour. Spent some time hanging at the springs and filtered more water before heading west on the Highline. I had never hiked this section of the Highline in this direction before. It was pretty nice. I saw two more people hiking just before you get to the power lines. They were buzzing today. Just about 100 yards before Dikk Williams creek I spooked 3 Elk and they crossed the trail about 20 feet in front of me. The first one across was a massive animal. I have never seen one that big even in a picture or on TV. The antlers were huge!!! They were of course long gone before I got my Iphone out to take a picture. Dik Williams creek was flowing nicely and made a great spot to fiter some more water. I found a spot just upstream where there were hundreds of Elk tracks all along the creek through the deep grass. Definately filter this water. I also munched on some wild raspberries I found found right where the trail crosses the creek. The last mile or so was very rocky and it was warming up. I made it into Tonto creek and my mountain bike was still there by the sign. I really enjoyed the last 3 miles back to my truck. It's all downhill except for one spot that is not bad at all. The bike proved to be a worthy shuttle vehicle this time. |
