| no partners | | I did this overnight hike last year and couldn't wait to do it again. I hit the trailhead at 8AM and it was pretty cold, around 35 degrees. The first leg of this hike is mostly downhill. I made good time to the first crossing of Workman creek and could hear the rush of the water from really far away. Upon sight of the stream my suspitions were confirmed. The water was high and somewhat murky. I could not find a spot to hop across and considered heading back since the fishing would obviously stink with the water conditions only worsening further downstream. Instead I lost the boots and socks and waded across with no problem. The second leg of this hike after the Forest boundary sign becomes quite steep for about the next 1.5 miles. The trail flattens out then and you come to the Boyer Cabin trail turnoff. The last leg is flat for a while (it was really muddy on this trip) then it begins the long downhill. I could hear and see the creek finally and it was still high and murky. As I made my way into the campsite area at the end of the trail, I noticed a tent right in the spot I had in mind. Having seen no other gear around, I hollered out and quickly discovered the tent had been abandoned. If this is your tent, I left it there. If that was your trash that was left around the campsite, I took it...
After a quick lunch and camp setup, I broke out the fly rod. A couple dropped into my campsite on a dayhike to see the waterfalls. They were running pretty good. Much to my surprise, I began catching rainbows right away on a bead head pattern. I caught 7 in all and kept a couple for dinner. They were all at least 12 inches long. The dayhiking couple made their ascent and I saw no one else. The night was cool and clear but I was very comfortable in my 35 degree bag and solo tent.
The next morning I caught and released 4 more nice rainbows before starting the long, long, long hike up and out. I took numerous short breaks in this section. I made it back to the crossing and lost the socks and boots again. Made it up and out in about an hour and 15 min from that spot.
The weather was great and so was the fishing. I caught 11 trout and released 8. Yum, yum, and yum! |
