Another back-up plan escaping the rain. Part of
Verde Valley "hat-trick"
taking in the V-Bar-V Petroglyph Site, Montezuma Well, and Montezuma Castle. Only needed to add Tuzigoot National Monument to have the "four-play"!
PHOTOS OF V-BAR-V PETROGLYPHS
1.
From I-17 exit 298, headed East along FR618. Photo taken at 4-way stop intersection with FR119.
2.
As FR618 rises out of the Wet Beaver Creek valley, you will see the "V-V" Heritage Site sign on your right. Note the rain falling to the south in Verde Valley.
3.
Cross the cattle guard and head south to the parking lot.
4.
Paid the $5 fee at the visitors center and started hiking the trail to the rock art. You pass the hearth of the old V-Bar-V ranch house.
5.
Signs point the way to the rock art...
6.
Fields were thick with Silverleaf Nightshade (Horse Nettle) flowers.
7.
Trail ends at the rock art site. Petroglyph panels are hidden behind the thicket of trees to the left.
8.
Get a private tour from the Ranger on site. "Jack" informs me that the Beaver Creek rock art style is relatively unique compared to other sites in Arizona.
9.
Turtles, deer, elk and blue herons are some of the more obvious petroglyphs...
10.
It's after 3:30pm and time to lock-up the site. Note the archeological dig markers, barriers and equipment.
11.
Closing time and my truck is the only vehicle in the parking lot. 2 deer were checking out my truck and ran off before I could snap a shot!
