With Lynn and the rain...
Got an early start from Ahwatukee to head up the I-17 to Flagstaff. Could see Mt. Humphrey engulfed by dark clouds - this could put a damper on the hiking plans. Continued around Hwy 89-A to Sunset Crater Road, arriving before 10am...
PHOTOS
1.
Head west along FR420 (Schultz Pass Road) from the 89-A/Sunset Crater Road intersection.
2.
Travel about 0.5 miles until you come to the "T" intersection of FR420 (Schultz Pass) and FR552 (Lockett Meadow). Turn right (north) onto FR552 towards Lockett Meadow.
3.
The road is well maintained and offers excellent views of the surrounding peaks.
4.
A crack of thunder and the weather begins to deteriorate as a storm comes in from the west...
5.
The road takes a 90 degree bend to the north avoiding a gravel pit.
6.
As the road climbs up Sugar Loaf Mountain, a panoramic view
of the Painted Desert
and Sunset Crater
suddenly appears through an opening in the trees...
7.
Make it to Lockett Meadow just as the deluge begins. Could handle the rain, but the lightning was too intense! Oh well, had a good look at the Inner Basin Trail Head and will have to leave the hike for another day...
8.
Time for "PLAN B"! Off to Sedona and hopefully out of the rain...
