With Benny Coe and Riley Kimball. We meet at 7:00am and drive up I-17 to Flagstaff, stopping for breakfast and supplies along the way. After taking the Forest Roads from the East off 89-A, make it to the trail head parking lot by 11:00am. Goal is to have a snowball fight in August in Arizona!


PHOTOS

1.From the trail head parking lot you come to the intersection of the Abineau and Bear Jaw trails. Riley signs us in at the TH Register.
2.Despite my hiking shirt, no maple leafs were encountered - GO LEAFS GO!
3.Guess we are here to view one of nature's "train wrecks". Talked to a couple of hikers that just completed the Abineau - "Tough, but doable" - "Lot's of boulder hopping and bushwacking" and I quote them...
4.Proceed up the Bear Jaw Trail. Pass through some stands of Ponderosa Pine, but soon come to a thicket of Aspens. Would like to see them again in their Autumn colours.
5.A rolling stone gathers no moss. This stone mustn't be rolling...
6.We take a break and check out our packed lunches.
7.The Bear Jaw continues upward as we approach 10,000 ft elevation.
8.We make the junction with the Waterline Trail. This is an old access road and the hiking is easy.
9.Riley scouts ahead along the Waterline Trail.
10.We agree that this can't possibly be the avalanche site!
11.The first views of snow and what appears to be avalanche destruction.
12.Did not see a bear jaw along the trail, but plenty of fungus. Start petition to rename more appropriately as "Fungus Trail"...
13.Moss and mushroom.
14.Unidentified berries.

16.Looks like pre-cooked, pan fried mushrooms.
