Good desert scenery with more green than expected; unfortunately no wildlife other than a few birds. We kept a good pace and were gratified to be told by a group of slower hikers that we were really "kicking a**".
Only one stretch of trail was a little hard to follow--I don't remember if it was on the Tortuga Trail leg or the Elephant Mountain Trail--but some cairns helped us through a dry creek bed with no time lost.
The short (prohibited) hike from the saddle to the fortress was a good addition, not only for the archaeology but also for the views.
This seems like a great area for hiking near the valley. If you're thinking Cave Creek, I would recommend driving right past the CC Recreation area and stopping here. (It's only 10-15 minutes more.) Less people, better aesthetic. |
