Preston decided that he didn't want to dodge Golf Balls this morning, so he invited me to join him on a short Hike. :) I suggested Spur Cross, with a Loop involving Dragonfly Trail and he was all for it. Met up with him and his wife at the TH and we had formed a well intentioned plan to do a Loop involving Elephant Mountain Trail and Spur Cross, tying in Dragonfly on the back side. Preston had plotted out a Route which took us up Elephant Mountain Trail to the Primitive Trail #252 for a somewhat longer Loop.

Well, good intentions don't always work, especially without the Route downloaded on the GPS... :o Once we hit the Tonto National Forest Boundary, the Route Finding proved more difficult as we progressed. We stuck with it for about 1/2 hour and finally about halfway to Trail #252, we gave up and turned around. That Loop will have to happen another day. We had spent so much time on the Route Finding that it was decided to just go back to the Elephant/Tortuga Junction and take Tortuga to Dragonfly. Even with the Mud adding 2 lbs to each shoe, we made really good time from there. Showed Preston a few of the Highlights of this Route including the Mine in the Jewel of the Creek Preserve. Saw a very nice Red-Tailed Hawk that landed in a dead Tree above us, but he took off before I could get a pic.

The Creek is running in the Preserve, which was very nice to see, since I had been seeing recent reports of it being dry further up. Finished Sightseeing a little bit of the Preserve and headed back to the vehicles.

Somewhere along the front half of the Hike I lost my sweatshirt after I had shed it 1/2 mile in. There were now quite a few people Hiking this morning and so after Preston left, I walked back to the TH just on the remote chance that someone had picked it up and left it there. Ran into a couple of people with Dogs that we had passed on the Hike and they told me that someone had picked it up and hung it on the Spur Cross/Tortuga Junction sign. So I hoofed it back up to get it. 50 ft from Junction, I ran into a Foursome that we had also passed and they had my Sweatshirt with them! They saw it on the sign, decided to take it and drop it at the TH. Every once in awhile, people really can be decent. : app : Hope to pay that forward some day... I thanked them and then joined them for the Hike back down to the TH. Very nice people, had some nice conversation. Got back to the Car and then called it a day, with all my gear now accounted for.... :)

Thanks for the Invite Preston, it was good to see both you and Bernie again. Love this area and this Trail and look forward to many more memories on it. We'll get that other Loop knocked out next time.... :)
