| no partners | | I drove to Cortez to do a little purchasing, and then to La Plata Canyon to hike in to inspect the area. I parked at the mouth of the canyon at the end of the county maintenance at an elevation of 8760' and was able to hike well up the road on hard packed tracks from snow mobiles, cross-country skis and some other things. I hiked in until a little after sunset, which I could see on the high peaks, and then turned back because I was hungry. It was cold, really cold in the canyon, but a good hike. New mountains in winter are fun for the individual who wants to enjoy the season, even if they want warm sun by March 15. I got a little past Boren Creek before turning back. I stopped at 9291', and due to the ups and downs at a few spots, I am rounding up. 550 feet is what I am giving this, even if it may have been more. Using the map, it looks like a 6 mile hike, which feels right. I should be able to summit at least a few of the peaks accessible via this canyon. This is good news. With this area being closer to me than Humphrey, I just don't see myself doing that this winter. |
