| no partners | | My intention was to summit Hayden Peak. It was not to be. I got to the trailhead too late, the snow, where there was snow, had the consistency of sugar, and I would have had to cross an obvious avalanche path with evidence of slab slides this season. I also experienced loud snow whumping while crossing a safe level area. It's freaky to hear for the first time. Either way, I wasn't really disappointed, and in fact the avalanche path gives me a legitimate excuse for turning back.
I followed the trail until I went directly up slope after it became buried under snow. Eventually I was on a grassy slope and hiked to point 12,170. From there I hiked toward the saddle and up onto a rocky ridge. I stopped there and turned back after some time. I got down early enough that I decided to drive up to Red Mountain Pass to camp, since I expected to hike Red Mt #3 the next day. I just should have gone to a hotel in Ouray, as the night was cold, way colder than 2 weeks ago at 12,760'. I'm all wintered/ Coloradoed out for a long time, perhaps for the season. We'll see. |
